Good morning Seattle!

Big day today! Right, soccer fans?! Today is a HUGE Cascadia Day match between the Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers. 67,000 rabid soccer at Centurylink Field to watch what will hopefully be a beat down of the Timbers by the Sounders.

So, what I wanted to do would be take a photograph of that game and post it here. BUT the NFL, yes NFL, in conjunction with the MLS no longer allows anything in the stadiums. So what that means is basically no more photographs with my D800 (iPhone only and we know how much that sucks). If I am ever fortunate enough to be allowed on the sidelines then I will get different photographs, but until then I am left with a few select photographs taken before the policy change. One of those being the one in this post.

This image was taken earlier this year right before a match with the other Cascadia opponent: the Vancouver Whitecaps.

So what makes this photograph special? Well, nothing in particular except that it is a panoramic photograph. That is, one images made up of several photographs. In this case, it is made up of 6 images. So why do it? Well, first of all, there will be much more detail in the complete image than what could ever be in one image of the same frame. Second, it allows a much wider field-of-view than a standard lens could (yes, I know that you can get an ultra wide angle lens). And lastly, its just plain cool to work in Photoshop.  Yes, the 6 images I took needed some Photoshop work to complete the panoramic.

So, how was this shot. First, manually set the correct exposure. Then, start taking the photographs, overlapping about 1/3 of each image. Simple, right ? Ok, perhaps not that easy, but I’ll save more details instructions for a separate blog post. In the mean time, enjoy the photograph.
