The Power of Candid Expressions: Infuse your Portraits with Authenticity and Emotion

Welcome to our photography blog, where we’re dedicated to helping you enhance your photography skills and artistic vision. In this installment, we’re delving into the world of candid portrait expressions—a powerful way to infuse your portraits with authenticity and emotion. Candid portraits go beyond posed shots, revealing genuine moments that tell stories and connect with viewers. Let’s dive into the world of candid portrait photography and learn how to capture those spontaneous, fleeting moments.

Tip 1: Establish Trust and Rapport. Building a comfortable and trusting relationship with your subject is the foundation of capturing candid expressions. Spend some time getting to know your subject before the shoot, engaging in casual conversation, and finding common ground. When your subject feels at ease with you, they’re more likely to reveal their true emotions, resulting in authentic and heartfelt moments.

Tip 2: Blend into the Background. To capture candid moments, it’s important to become an unobtrusive observer. Rather than directing every pose and expression, position yourself at a distance and use a longer lens if necessary. This allows your subject to relax and act naturally, forgetting about the camera’s presence. The goal is to become a fly on the wall, ready to capture the magic as it unfolds.

Tip 3: Timing is Everything. Candid moments are all about timing. Be patient and attentive, anticipating when interesting expressions or interactions might occur. Keep your finger on the shutter button and be prepared to capture those split-second reactions that can often convey the most genuine emotions.

Tip 4: Utilize Natural Environments. Choose locations that resonate with your subject and provide natural settings for candid moments to occur. Whether it’s a park, a bustling street, or a cozy cafe, the environment can inspire spontaneous interactions and expressions. Encourage your subject to engage with their surroundings, and you’ll capture a rich tapestry of emotions and reactions.

Tip 5: Embrace Imperfections. Candid portraits are all about embracing imperfections and capturing raw, unfiltered emotions. Don’t shy away from capturing genuine laughter, thoughtful expressions, or even moments of vulnerability. These authentic moments have a powerful impact and can create portraits that are both relatable and emotionally resonant.

Conclusion: candid expressions are a window into the soul, revealing layers of emotions and stories that posed shots might miss. By building trust, blending into the background, and timing your shots perfectly, you can capture the essence of your subject in their most natural state. So, step away from traditional poses, let go of perfection, and embark on a journey to capture candid moments that tell captivating stories through your lens.

Happy shooting!

Chris

Drone Photography Now Available for Business and Personal Use

Hello friends,

I am pleased to announce that I have passed my FAA Part 107 exam and am now a licensed commercial drone pilot with capability for drone aerial photography and/or video.

What does that mean for you? Well, drone photography offers a perspective that ground photography just cannot provide. In real estate, aerial photography is the perfect way to show off the surrounding environment of your property. Why? Because location is everything. And for many industries, location sells.  For others, the use of aerial photographs or video can be included in digital marketing (and print with photo) on your website, social media posts, and email campaigns. It really doesn’t matter what your business does or where your business is located, by adding stunning visuals it will truly complement your marketing and creative efforts on getting your message out. And finally, keep your employees and crew safe and out of danger by using my drone services for various inspections and assessment of hard-to-reach or potentially treacherous places and situations.

Our aerial photography and video services are not only just for business, but also for every individual. Consider a personal portrait session and wedding photographs that can now have a new perspective for a truly unique image. We are only limited by your imagination and what is legal and limited by FAA regulations.

Please give a call and let’s talk about how we can help you achieve your goals.

Blessings,

Chris.

Bri and Mike

Hi everyone, and welcome back to my blog. Today, I am blessed to post a gorgeous engagement shoot with an amazing couple. Mike used to work for us at McKenna Video Services, years ago when he was in high school. Mike was one of our video editors. Wow has time flown by! We were so excited when he reached out to us to take his engagement photos. Of course we accepted right away, and had the opportunity to meet Mike’s love, Bri. What a beauty! Mike, you did good!!:)

I met up with Mike and Bri at the Mayflower Dairy Barn in Frederickson. I love this location for all of it’s different backdrop options. We dodged a few raindrops early on, but ended up with a beautiful evening. Perfect overcast skies for that great skin tone that all photographers hope for.

Congratulations to you both, Bri and Mike. It is obvious how much you love each other. Both Chris and I want to wish you the most amazing life together. Always have fun!!

Emily and Joey Are Getting Married!

Hi Everyone! I am so excited to tell you about the awesome engagement photo shoot I had with Emily and Joey this past Sunday. Emily is a friend of my daughter. They were tennis doubles partners in their senior year of high school. Winners-of course:)

I met Joey for the first time on Sunday. He greeted me with a great big hug!! He is terrific! I feel like I have known him for so many years.

Emily and Joey are such an adorable couple. They have an obvious love for each other and are so excited to start their lives together. We cannot wait to be a part of their August wedding!

Please enjoy a few of this lovely couple’s pics. It is an honor and a privilege to know people of great character.

Jillian and Brenden

Merry Christmas to you all! What a wonderful and joyous time to celebrate the birth of our Savior.

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing Jillian and Brenden. These two will be getting married this upcoming summer and have asked Chris and myself to be their photographers. We are honored! And can hardly wait for August to get here:)

Here are a few of my favorite photos from their engagement session at the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. We took advantage of one of the few dry (but cold) December days. There are a few pics with an extra little cutie (my favs).  Enjoy:)

Day vs. Evening: Which Engagement Photo is Right for You?

Today, I have a guest blogger writing for me. I would like to introduce Anna K. from Simply Bridal to offer our readers some commentary on engagement photography.

Enagement Photographs

——————————————————

We love engagements photos because they are the most relaxed wedding shoots you will encounter during your wedding journey. That’s because they show the bride and groom in their most relaxed state with the person they love. Now, brides and grooms have a choice of having their engagement photos done during any time of the day or night. However, selecting when to have your picture taken can be difficult. Have no fear though because we’re going to help you decide.

Choose a daytime shoot if…

You love the outdoors. Outdoor shots work best during the daytime. They are also particularly good if you plan on showcasing any activities on your photo shoot.

You are a traditionalist. Your wedding is going to be by the book, right down to the engagement photos. After all, Grace Kelly’s engagement pictures were taken in the light and who are you to argue with a princess?

Choose an evening shoot if…

You’re a city dweller. Bright lights plus big city equals a great backdrop for a night-time shoot. We love to see pictures taken with the city’s lights used as a backdrop. There are very few engagement photos that can compete with the lights and sights of London, Chicago or Paris.

You’re trendy. Very few engagement photos are taken and night, so the couples that opt for this style of pictures are ahead of the curve. Don’t be surprised if you find these photos better suited for an art gallery than a wedding album.

Mix and Match if…

You love to tell a story. Another big thing in engagement photos is storytelling. This is when couples use their shoot to tell a story over the course of a day. For the best effects, a mixture of daytime and night-time shots should be used to show a natural progression of your story.

Engagement photos are the first chance couples have to show the world who they are as a couple. Yet, deciding on what kind of photos are right for you is easier said than done. One thing is for certain, whichever you choose, be sure you love it as much as you love each other.

Melanie & Tyler’s Engagement Session

Our congratulations go out to Melanie and Tyler, who were recently engaged to each other. We are really looking forward to their wedding next February in beautiful Snoqualmie (we’ll pray for decent weather).

We had the opportunity to photograph them together for their engagement portraits last week in Enumclaw at a place called Hope Hill and at Tyler’s grandmothers house. The session was extremely fun, but hot, and I only got stung one time while in the field of flowers.

We’re posting a few of those photos here for your viewing and we’ll be adding their gallery to our Zenfolio portfolio later today.

Congrats Mel and Tyler, and we’ll see you soon.

Blessings,

Chris.

Jodi and Alden: Let’s Be Together

This is a short photo montage video that we put together for Jodi and Alden, who are going to be married next month.

I took the photographs contained within this montage at a local park, here in Puyallup, not too far from our studio. It was a great shoot, despite the rain, and we enjoyed our time with this great couple.

Congratulations, Jodi and Alden, on your engagement and we are looking forward to your wedding.

Blessings,
Chris

Stacy and Shawn: A Love to Live For

Its been a few weeks since I posted, but that doesn’t mean that we haven’t been busy. 🙂

Today, I am posting a video of some of the engagement photographs that I took Stacy and Shawn, who will be married later this month (I am really looking forward to photographing their wedding). These photographs were taken at Tumwater Falls, in Tumwater, WA in the early to mid-morning. It was a spectacular day and we captured some awesome photos. The last couple of photographs in this montage were shot down on the waterfront in Olympia, WA. next to the statue of the Kissing Couple (it is very popular to replicate the statue pose and have your photo taken next to it).

Congratulations, Stacy and Shawn, on your engagement and we’ll see you at the church later this month.

Blessings,

Chris
