Love the Longboard

Last week, I had the great pleasure to photograph Jonny for his senior portraits. I had never met Jonny before that afternoon, but I could tell, the minute I saw him, that he was a guy with charisma. He mentioned that he loved to longboard, so, of course, I had to ask if he had is longboard with him. He said it was in the car. “Wanna get it?” I asked him.  I think I surprised him…pleasantly. The look of joy on his face when he came riding down the path on his board was priceless! I love shooting seniors, especially when they are engaged in something they love. We got a few action shots, just for fun, to round out his session. It was a great shoot!

Jonny and Kate, I had a great time with both of you! Thanks for the entertainment:) And I hope you enjoyed your weekend at the Dave Matthews concert!!

Caitrin’s Senior Photos

It was a beautiful afternoon at Owen Beach at Pt Defiance! A beautiful day for a beautiful young woman to have her senior portraits done. Caitrin will be starting her senior year at Franklin Pierce High School this fall. We have decided to try something different with her. Cat and I will be spreadng her senior session out over the course of the school year, shooting a mini session each month, and taking advantage of the many different sports and activities she has as well as all of the seasons throughout the year. This was our first session: Casual day at the beach. Look for some of Cat’s future sessions, as well: soccer, rainy day, snowy winter, Seahawks special and formal Prom. Thanks, Caitrin, for a great time out! You are a terrific model with an afinity for fun:) Here’s to a great senior year!!

Alden-PHS 2014

Recently, I had the distinct honor of photographing Alden for his senior year. What an amazing young man!  Alden is gifted in the arts, so it was only fitting that he wanted his shoot at the Puyallup High School Performing Arts Center, where he spends much of his time. This was a unique location for me to shoot a senior, and I was so pleased with the unique backgrounds this location had to offer.

Thank you for the opportunity to honor your career at PHS, Alden.  It was a pleasure to meet you and your family.  Best wishes to you and your successful future.

Blessings,

~Lynette

Tacoma Nights

Over these past few months, I have been tackling an assignment for a continuing education course I am taking. This lesson is all about night time photography. This is a new genre for me, so in an effort to round out my photography skills, I gladly took this on.

Below is a compilation of photographs I took last weekend (when the weather was better) downtown Tacoma at and around the Museum of Glass. I hope you enjoy my first attempt at night photography.

Girls Soccer-FPHS vs. Sumner

It has been a great soccer season for the Franklin Pierce high School girls, and they are now preparing for the last couple of regular season games.  Looks like they will be on to the play offs in November! These ladies have put in great effort and tremendous sportsmanship this year. With all of their hard work and new coaching staff (thanks Coaches Green and Pich!) they are poised for a quality record this year. Please enjoy a few photos from Thursday’s game against the powerhouse, Sumner.

Go Cards!

New Testimonial

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share a note we received from another happy client. It is brief, but valid. It reads:

“Thank you again for everything! You are an artist with the camera…love ALL the pictures. It will be difficult to choose.  ~ Tricia L.”

Thanks Tricia for your kind words. And that you for the opportunity to photograph your beautiful daughters.

Blessings,

Chris.

7 Ways to Combat Photographers Block

I am stuck in the middle of some serious photographers block. Winter can do that to you! Not a lot of clients, gray and rainy skies, shorter days, etc. all leave one wondering what-in-the-heck to shoot. And if you live it in a city like I do-extremely boring-there is never anything going on around town to provide great opportunities to shoot (ok extremely boring city is debatable at a few times each year). So its natural to fall into the photographers equivalent of “writers block.”

I think that every photographer goes through this from time-to-time. It’s how you deal with it that separates us from the casual photo buff. For me, I fall into training mode and take the opportunity to brush up on the fundamentals or learn a new skill. This year, I am learning HDR photography and am excited to jump into spring and summer with this new skill (I’ll post a few practice photographs in a little while).

Well, when scouring the net looking for some inspiration, I found another blog post on this same phenomenon. I liked it so much, I thought that I would link to it to let you read it too. Click on the link below for that post.

http://500px.com/blog/553/7-ways-to-combat-photographer-s-block

In it, the author gives seven specific things to do to combat block. Those are:

7) collaborate with others;
6) go somewhere new;
5) shoot technical photography
4) shoot street photography
3) shoot feelings;
2) find a color;
1) Just go out and shoot.

I am not going to rewrite here what’s pointed out in that article, with one exception: Just go out and shoot. Many times, just walking up and down the street and seeing something interesting (or not) can inspire an idea. Shooting something random or within your line of sight, no matter how interesting or dull, can lead you to somewhere unintended.

And if nothing else, shooting gives you the opportunity to sharpen your skills.

Blessings and happy shooting.

Mark – Puyallup High School Class of 2012

Wow! What a fun and energetic senior photo shoot I had with mark! For an early spring day, we were blessed with the perfect overcast, but bright weather that photographers long for.  Mark is a great guy who loves music, specifically Rush, as you will surely notice from his choice of rocker T-shirts.  He is a gifted bass player and shows off his beautiful Rickenbacker.  I love photographing teens! They have such an introspective impression of themselves, and all they want to do is express it.  Capturing their youthful, yet sometimes quirky personalities is what I enjoy most.  And with Mark, his cute “smirk” was my favorite expression. Thanks, Mark, fr a great day and your willing attitude.  This is why I love my job:)

Enjoy!

Check the Credentials

Ok people. We just saw a story on KING5 news in a “get Jesse” segment about a local photographer who blew a couple of weddings and is now being sued by the couples that hired her. Unfortunately, we knew her and all I have to say is before you go hiring a photographer for your one-time event, like a wedding, please, please, please check their credentials.

Ask questions like where they got their training? How many weddings have you done? What experience do you have? And most importantly what is the process for settling a dispute?

Rest assured that Chris McKenna Photography/McKenna Video and Photo is completely trained and have earned our PPC certificate at an accredited school and we are constantly under the tutelage of some world renowned photographers. We are the veterans of numerous weddings but are very selective as to who we choose to work with. By doing so, we know that we can give you our undivided attention and professionalism.

For those couples that got screwed by this individual-we are so sorry for your lost photographs. If there is anything that we can do to help mitigate the situation, please give us a call.

Blessings,

Chris

Snowmageddon 2012

We here in Washington State are still recovering from what the broadcast news called “snowmageddon” or the “snowpocalypse.” This was a period of intense snow (22 inches in less than 24 hours in some parts) followed by a long-lasting ice storm. The ice-storm knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of people (we were out for almost 4 days) with some being out for almost a week. A lot of people lost trees in their yard and many in public areas including streets, parks, etc.

While these events were beautiful to behold, it was dangerous to travel outside. While I would have liked to travel around and get some interesting pictures, I thought that I would share a few that we took around the house.

Enjoy.

Chris.
