Photographic Composition: Elevating Your Photography Through Framing

Hi Friends!!

Welcome to our latest photography blog post, where I sometimes delve into unraveling the secrets behind capturing stunning images. Today, I’m diving into the art of composition, focusing on one of the most powerful tools in your photography toolkit: framing. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned photographer, mastering framing techniques can significantly enhance the visual impact of your photographs. Let’s start to explore the world of composition and learn how to use framing to create captivating images.

What is Framing in Photography? Framing in photography involves using elements within the scene to create a visual frame around your subject. This frame can be a natural or man-made element like a window, door, archway, tree branches, or even the hands of a person. The purpose of framing is to draw the viewer’s attention to the subject and add depth and context to your photograph.

  1. Find Natural Frames: look for natural elements in your surroundings that can serve as frames. An open window, a tunnel, or an overhanging tree branch can all create a visually appealing frame around your subject. Natural frames not only add depth to your composition but also provide a sense of place and context.
  2. Experiment with Foreground Elements: placing objects in the foreground of your image can create an effective frame around your subject. For example, you can shoot through tall grass, flowers, or even a crowd of people to add layers and depth to your photograph. Experiment with different foreground elements to see how they impact the overall composition.
  3. Play with Symmetry: symmetry can be a powerful framing tool. Look for symmetrical elements like arches, doorways, or reflections in water that can create a balanced and visually pleasing frame around your subject. Symmetry adds a sense of harmony to your composition.
  4. Think About Scale and Proportion: consider the scale and proportion of the frame in relation to your subject. A small frame can create an intimate and cozy feeling, while a large frame can provide a sense of grandeur. Experiment with different frame sizes to see how they affect the mood of your photograph.
  5. Pay Attention to Light and Shadows: the interplay of light and shadows within your frame can add drama and depth to your composition. Position your subject in a way that takes advantage of the lighting conditions, and use shadows to enhance the frame’s visual impact.

I hope that you see that mastering the art of framing in photography opens up a world of creative possibilities. By incorporating natural frames, experimenting with foreground elements, playing with symmetry, considering scale and proportion, and leveraging light and shadows, you can transform ordinary scenes into visually captivating images. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to experiment and refine your framing skills.

Happy shooting, and may your photographs tell compelling stories through the art of composition!

Chris

P.S. I am providing a link to some examples of photographic framing here. Also, don’t forget to check out our galleries and see for yourself where we have included framing.

And…The Force Was With Them

Wow! What a fun and beautiful wedding day!

It is always such and honor and a blessing for Chris and myself to be asked to photograph a wedding. This one was special…

With a nod to some of our favorite Sci-Fi/fantasy fiction/sit-com series (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Friends, Big Bang Theory), Matt and Susan were “going on an adventure”.

Our happy couple said their vows in Susan’s parents back yard with friends and family there to celebrate with them. It was absolutely beautiful (which you will see in the pics I’ve posted)! And so much fun! There was laughter, dancing, joy and true love throughout the day. What an amazing day! Starting off with the “pre-flight announcements” and concluding with fun and funky dancing-it was the best! Oh, and let’s not forget the incredible dessert table that Susan’s mom and friends put together. Certainly one of the best that we’ve ever seen (and tasted).

Congratulations, Matt & Susan. Thank you for choosing us to help capture your special day and be part of your wedding celebration.

May the Force be with you. ALWAYS!!!

Cayden’s Senior Photo Session

It’s almost summer!! At least the weather is trying to tell us that…

Last Sunday, after a very wet weekend, Cayden and I met up in downtown Tacoma near the Museum of Glass to snap some senior photos for Cayden’s graduation. It was a fantastic day!! And, I must say, Cayden is a fantastic kid!! He is heading off to boot camp for our honored U.S. Army in July, and his mom just couldn’t let him go without a few good pics

Graduating from Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup, WA, it is obvious that Cayden loves his family. He has so much family support for his future life plans! I love great family stories like this. We need more of it.

Cayden, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with you. You are a quality young man and I am blessed to know you. I can’t wait to get updates from your mom on your military career!!

Have a beautiful weekend, everyone, and please enjoy a few of my favorite Cayden pics…

Family is Everything

Last weekend I was blessed to shoot a family photo session. If you remember the weekend weather…it wasn’t great. We even arranged to reschedule if, by 8:00 Saturday morning, the rain had not let up. Wow! Not only did it not rain, but the sky was just about perfect! As a photographer, I live for mornings like that; when I don’t have to worry about harsh light, shadows or squinty eyes. For me , it was a dream:)

This was our first time meeting (at least the extended family) and knowing what I know about family gatherings…you just never know what you’re gonna get (haha). Well, I am happy to say, I got it good;) What I observed in this family dynamic was an abundance of joy. They were genuinely having fun with each other and truly loved spending time together. And, this day was a special birthday celebration, as well. Rarely do I find this much harmony within a family.

What an honor it was for me to photograph this gorgeous family and document this precious time in their lives!

Family is EVERYTHING!!

We Won a 2022 Telly Award!

Hello friends,

We are excited and thrilled to announce that we have won a 2022 Telly Award (winner banner) for our production of “Around 2021“, a compilation of video that I shot around the region last year. It is a first for me to win at this level, especially since I haven’t really done much with video in the last few years-at least professionally.

The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 to honor excellence in local, regional and cable television commercials with non-broadcast video and television programming added soon after. With the recent evolution and rise of digital video (web series, VR, 360 and beyond), the Telly Awards today also reflects and celebrates this exciting new era of the moving image on and offline.

The Telly Awards annually showcases the best work created within television and across video, for all screens. Receiving over 12,000 entries from all 50 states and 5 continents, Telly Award winners represent work from some of the most respected advertising agencies, television stations, production companies and publishers from around the world. The Telly Awards recognizes work that has been created on the behalf of a client, for a specific brand and/or company (including your own) or self-directed as a creative endeavor.

To say that I am excited to have received such a prestigious honor is an understatement. However, I am humbled to have been invited to submit and be even considered for such an achievement as there are so many talented individuals and production companies creating and producing so many beautiful and entertaining programs and I would never want to presume that what we do is anything greater or more significant.

I want to thank you all for your support over the years and encouragement to keep going.

Blessings to you all.

Chris.

In fact, we shot their wedding a few years ago…and now it’s time for their oldest to graduate!! We were blessed to have had some amazing weather on one of the only dry days these past couple of weeks.

Paige is an amazing young woman who is an honor student and plays water polo for Rogers High School. As you will see from the pics, she LOVES sunflowers!! We had a great time on the waterfront and in downtown Tacoma…and she was awesome!!

Congratulations, Paige! You will do great things!

Hi Friends.

It’s no secret that the Pacific Northwest is home to some of the most majestic scenery in the United States. Breathtaking coastlines, lush forests, and gushing waterfalls lie around every corner, offering plenty of inspiration for landscape photographers. As a result, Tacoma and Pierce County is home to some of the best in the business, who have made documenting natural scenes their mission.

We are happy to report that I made Giggsters list as “One of Tacoma’s Best Landscape Photographers” for 2021. Quite an honor to be sure.

2022 Commercial Real Estate Video Available

Happy New Years my Friends,

I hope that you were able to ring in the New Years is a safe and sane manner. We did-it was very quiet for us after about 10 p.m. when we left a friends house after a fun time playing cards and catching up on old times. Except for having the neighborhood fireworks going off until after 1 a.m. it was a tranquil way to usher in a new year and a new start.

Anyway, 2022 will bring me a full year of drone and real estate photography and video. In case you missed it, I passed my FAA Part 107 exam last summer and am able to fly an unmanned aerial system (drone) legally and without any issues with the proper certifications in place to put a commercial drone in the air.

So with a full year, I want to extend an offer to you to have me come out and film and photograph your commercial real estate and use the product as part of your marketing campaigns.

If you haven’t seen what that might look at, you can find an example of my video work at the link below. And as far as photographs are concerned, you can see some examples of that work on my real estate portfolio page, albeit that most of it is non-commercial RE. The video I take can be used independently or as part of a sales pitch published by commercial real estate agents. An example of a total marketing piece can be found at the following link: https://vimeo.com/showcase/7164490/video/471901549 (please note this example is not my work nor am I associated with it in any way, shape, or form).

My rates are reasonable, my turn-around is quick, I’m insured, and available most of the time within reason. So don’t hesitate to call me and let’s at least discuss.

Blessings and God’s peace.

Chris

Sunflowers, Sunshine and Family Fun!

What a beautiful family and a beautiful sunny day!

I was blessed to photograph the Welton family last weekend at Maris Farms in Buckley.  I loved watching this family interact with each other as they made their way through the farm. The children were so adorable as they ran through the rows of sunflowers (followed by mom and dad, of course). Chris and Linnea are amazing parents and never missed an opportunity to teach their children about the wonders of nature that surrounded them. Tons of great candids! A fantastic and fun documentation of this time in their lives…one they will cherish forever ?

Please enjoy these pics…

Blessings,

~Lynette
