The Power of Candid Expressions: Infuse your Portraits with Authenticity and Emotion

Welcome to our photography blog, where we’re dedicated to helping you enhance your photography skills and artistic vision. In this installment, we’re delving into the world of candid portrait expressions—a powerful way to infuse your portraits with authenticity and emotion. Candid portraits go beyond posed shots, revealing genuine moments that tell stories and connect with viewers. Let’s dive into the world of candid portrait photography and learn how to capture those spontaneous, fleeting moments.

Tip 1: Establish Trust and Rapport. Building a comfortable and trusting relationship with your subject is the foundation of capturing candid expressions. Spend some time getting to know your subject before the shoot, engaging in casual conversation, and finding common ground. When your subject feels at ease with you, they’re more likely to reveal their true emotions, resulting in authentic and heartfelt moments.

Tip 2: Blend into the Background. To capture candid moments, it’s important to become an unobtrusive observer. Rather than directing every pose and expression, position yourself at a distance and use a longer lens if necessary. This allows your subject to relax and act naturally, forgetting about the camera’s presence. The goal is to become a fly on the wall, ready to capture the magic as it unfolds.

Tip 3: Timing is Everything. Candid moments are all about timing. Be patient and attentive, anticipating when interesting expressions or interactions might occur. Keep your finger on the shutter button and be prepared to capture those split-second reactions that can often convey the most genuine emotions.

Tip 4: Utilize Natural Environments. Choose locations that resonate with your subject and provide natural settings for candid moments to occur. Whether it’s a park, a bustling street, or a cozy cafe, the environment can inspire spontaneous interactions and expressions. Encourage your subject to engage with their surroundings, and you’ll capture a rich tapestry of emotions and reactions.

Tip 5: Embrace Imperfections. Candid portraits are all about embracing imperfections and capturing raw, unfiltered emotions. Don’t shy away from capturing genuine laughter, thoughtful expressions, or even moments of vulnerability. These authentic moments have a powerful impact and can create portraits that are both relatable and emotionally resonant.

Conclusion: candid expressions are a window into the soul, revealing layers of emotions and stories that posed shots might miss. By building trust, blending into the background, and timing your shots perfectly, you can capture the essence of your subject in their most natural state. So, step away from traditional poses, let go of perfection, and embark on a journey to capture candid moments that tell captivating stories through your lens.

Happy shooting!

Chris

Cayden’s Senior Photo Session

It’s almost summer!! At least the weather is trying to tell us that…

Last Sunday, after a very wet weekend, Cayden and I met up in downtown Tacoma near the Museum of Glass to snap some senior photos for Cayden’s graduation. It was a fantastic day!! And, I must say, Cayden is a fantastic kid!! He is heading off to boot camp for our honored U.S. Army in July, and his mom just couldn’t let him go without a few good pics

Graduating from Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup, WA, it is obvious that Cayden loves his family. He has so much family support for his future life plans! I love great family stories like this. We need more of it.

Cayden, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with you. You are a quality young man and I am blessed to know you. I can’t wait to get updates from your mom on your military career!!

Have a beautiful weekend, everyone, and please enjoy a few of my favorite Cayden pics…

Audrey at SAMI

Well, looks like we are officially out of our fantastic summer weather and full on into fall. This time of year has its challenges for we photographers who really like to shoot outside in our beautiful PNW, but also gives us some really creative ways to get those coveted senior photos and still not drench our models:)

I’d like to introduce you to my newest and most favorite senior model, Audrey. What an amazing lady! And look at that smile!!

Audrey was accepted and is attending SAMI (Science and Math Institute) which is part of the Tacoma Public School system. It is quite an honor to be chosen as a SAMI student, and Audrey loves it there!! She chose to have her senior photo session at the Environmental Learning Center which is inside of Pt Defiance Park…right next to the Zoo! Really cool building! We had some great backdrops to work with. They even have a whale skeleton!

We had a fantastic time, Audrey and I, and I am so honored that she chose me to be her photographer and help her celebrate this senior year.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite pics of this beautiful girl and her sweet smile.

It was such a privilege to meet up with Paige for her Senior Photo Session. And extra special because Chris and I are friends with her folks. In fact, we shot their wedding a few years ago…and now it’s time for their oldest to graduate!! We were blessed to have had some amazing weather on one of the only dry days these past couple of weeks.

Paige is an amazing young woman who is an honor student and plays water polo for Rogers High School. As you will see from the pics, she LOVES sunflowers!! We had a great time on the waterfront and in downtown Tacoma…and she was awesome!!

Congratulations, Paige! You will do great things!

Celebrating Barit’s Senior Year

What a strange and wonderful year it has been. Our high school seniors are finishing out their education differently than expected, yet they are finishing. Congratulations to them all!!!

My biggest congratulations this year is to my nephew, Barit, who is completing his high school year through Pierce College. What a fantastic achievement! Barit is a great kid! We had an awesome time capturing one of his favorite activities for his senior photo session…rock climbing! Barit climbs regularly at Edgeworks climbing in Tacoma. Unfortunately, with our state mandated shutdown, Edgeworks is not open, so we did the next best thing…the Sprinker climbing wall. Barit showed me all he had with hangs and climbs and holds and all…it was pretty spectacular! We also went up to High Voltage Records in North Tacoma (also closed), a favorite hang out for Barit and his friends. We did get a few shots from the outside there. Business windows were boarded up, but have been painted with beautiful murals, so that was a nice surprise:)

All in all, we had a great time together. Barit is a fun and interesting conversationalist. We talked politics (good thing we’re on the same side), religion, and Covid crisis. It was a good day!

Congratulations, Barit! You did good!:)

Gorgeous Heather

Happy Saturday, everyone! It’s almost summer, and the weather is finally here!! Wow! What a great spring we are having! Amazing days that have given me wonderful photographic opportunities for my seniors.

This is Heather. She is the 2nd graduate from this family. I shot her brother’s senior photos a few years ago (check out Bryan’s blog https://chrismckennaphotography.com/?s=bryan ) and was thrilled when their mom asked me back again to document Heather’s senior year.

We met up at a new venue for me in Edgewood: the Nelson Nature Park. Other than the excessive pollen- UGH!-it was a terrific place for photos. Both Heather and I are bothered by the spring allergy season, but I give her credit for toughing it out:) What a wonderful young lady! I had an awesome time with her and enjoyed hearing about her future. She has so much ahead of her.

Congratulations on your graduation, Heather! I wish you all the best for your college years. Have an amazing time!

Christian’s Senior Photos

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog. This one is super special! My latest senior session is for a really cool guy named Christian.

Christian’s mom is one of my Real Estate mentors. She entrusted me with the honor of documenting her son’s senior year with a photo session, and I am blessed.

Christian is graduating from Cascade Christian High School in Puyallup, WA, where he played football. After graduation, he is looking forward to attending the Ministry Institute through Puyallup Four Square Church.

Christian and I recently met up at the Mayfield Dairy Barn on a beautiful spring evening. This was the first time I had met Christian, but soon we became friends:) He is really fun and an excellent model! I enjoyed our time together.

Congratulations, Christian! Enjoy your graduation and these next years to come!
